BESS Projects in Vietnam (2024-2026): Market Overview and Growth Opportunities

From 2024 to 2026, Vietnam's energy storage market entered a period of rapid growth, with numerous Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects announced or commissioned. Beyond battery technology and control systems, one critical yet often overlooked component is the BESS Container - the structural enclosure that protects the battery system, PCS, HVAC, and auxiliary equipment throughout the system's operational lifecycle.

Looking at these real-world projects, it is clear that demand for international-standard BESS Containers is increasing in parallel with investment in Vietnam's energy storage market.

1. BESS in Vietnam is more than just Batteries

When people think of a BESS project, they often focus on lithium-ion batteries, PCS (Power Conversion Systems), or EMS (Energy Management Systems). However, in most industrial-scale and utility-scale BESS projects today, all of these components are integrated inside purpose-built containers.

A container is far more than a protective outer shell. It serves as the primary structural framework of the entire system and must satisfy numerous technical requirements, including outdoor corrosion resistance, water and dust protection, integration of HVAC systems, fire suppression systems (FSS), maintenance doors, service access, and compliance with international transportation standards.

As a result, the growth of BESS projects is driving increasing demand for qualified BESS Container manufacturers.

2.1. EVNHANOI Commissions a 50 MW / 100 MWh BESS

In July 2026, EVNHANOI officially commissioned five BESS installations at the 110 kV substations of Bac Thang Long, Quang Minh, Sai Dong 2, Phung Xa, and Thanh Oai, with a combined capacity of 50 MW / 100 MWh.

In this project, VinEnergo served as the system developer and BESS solution provider. Each installation delivers 10 MW of power and 20 MWh of energy storage, supporting load regulation, improving grid stability, and increasing the integration capacity of renewable energy into the distribution network.

From a supply chain perspective, this project is also a representative example of a containerized BESS, where battery systems, Power Conversion Systems (PCS), and auxiliary equipment are fully integrated into specialized containers before transportation and on-site installation.

TaiyoEnergy participated in the project as the manufacturer of BESS Container enclosures, fabricated according to VinEnergo's engineering design. The containers were produced to meet the project's requirements for structural integrity, equipment integration, and quality standards. This project highlights the increasingly important role of Vietnam's mechanical engineering manufacturers within the supply chain for large-scale energy storage projects.

2.2. EVNNPC's BESS Deployment Program

Alongside EVNHANOI, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) is also implementing a BESS investment program across its distribution network.

According to the published plan, the initial phase is expected to reach approximately 305 MW, with expansion to approximately 530 MW in subsequent phases. These systems are planned for deployment at multiple 110 kV substations across Northern Vietnam to enhance load balancing and reduce grid stress during peak demand periods.

If implemented as scheduled, this will become one of Vietnam's largest BESS Container deployment programs.

From a manufacturing perspective, projects of several hundred megawatts place exceptionally high demands on container manufacturers in terms of:

  • Mass production capability
  • Consistent quality control
  • On-time delivery
  • Compliance with international standards for structural fabrication, anti-corrosion coating, and quality inspection

This reflects a global trend, where a single BESS investment program may require hundreds or even thousands of containers.

2.3. EVN-ADB Pilot BESS Project

In 2024, EVN, in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and GEAPP, initiated studies for a 50 MW pilot BESS project in Northern Vietnam.

The project's objective is not only to evaluate the effectiveness of energy storage but also to test BESS operational models within Vietnam's power grid, thereby supporting the development of future technical standards and regulatory frameworks.

Although this is a pilot project, it clearly demonstrates an industry trend: utility-scale BESS installations are increasingly adopting containerized solutions to simplify transportation, installation, maintenance, and future capacity expansion.

This means that the container is no longer merely an auxiliary component but has become a critical part of the overall BESS project.

3. As Project scale Increases, requirements for BESS Containers also evolve

While smaller commercial BESS installations may require only one or two containers, projects ranging from tens to hundreds of megawatt-hours often require multiple specialized containers operating as an integrated system.

A modern BESS Container must not only protect the equipment inside but also simultaneously satisfy numerous technical requirements, including:

  • Steel structures capable of supporting the heavy weight of battery systems
  • Appropriate IP protection ratings for long-term outdoor operation
  • Anti-corrosion coating systems compliant with standards such as ISO 12944
  • Integrated HVAC systems to maintain optimal battery temperature
  • Integrated fire suppression and gas detection systems
  • Maintenance doors, service access, and working spaces designed according to the system integrator's specifications
  • Compliance with road and sea transportation requirements, including CSC certification when export is required

These requirements make the manufacturing of BESS Containers significantly more demanding than conventional shipping containers or other industrial container applications.

4. Vietnam's BESS supply chain is taking shape

The rapid growth of BESS projects is creating opportunities not only for battery manufacturers and system integrators but also for the development of a comprehensive domestic supply chain.

A complete containerized BESS project typically involves:

  • Project developers
  • System integrators
  • Battery suppliers
  • PCS suppliers
  • HVAC manufacturers
  • Fire suppression system manufacturers
  • BESS Container manufacturers
  • Transportation and installation contractors

Among these participants, the BESS Container enclosure serves as the mechanical foundation that integrates all other subsystems while directly influencing the operational performance, maintenance efficiency, and service life of the entire BESS installation.
